Live and learn in harmony
UWC-USA’s boarding program sees first-year students living alongside second-year students in the residential house. The blend creates a dynamic living experience that merges perspectives, cultures and traditions. Living alongside peers from diverse backgrounds, speaking different languages, and embracing varied values, students here quickly master the art of forging connections.
After all, building relationships is fundamental to the UWC mission. Hence, it is prioritized from the very beginning of each student’s journey. This close-knit community ensures every new pupil steps onto campus with an existing network of peers and mentors, ready to provide guidance every step of the way.
However, the true magic lies in the informal interactions between students, faculty, and residential life staff. Faculty members open their homes to students; they cook together and even embark on weekend hikes, creating an atmosphere where learning extends far beyond the traditional classroom setting.
Engagement beyond classrooms
At UWC-USA, leaders are made in the great outdoors. Its signature Wilderness program ensures this, instilling strong leadership skills in students through backpacking expeditions in the Grand Canyon, Wilderness Leadership Training sessions and snowshoeing to the Yurt. Each journey nurtures skills in technical areas such as camp-craft, risk management, and navigation. The entire program spans four semesters and culminates with a capstone trek designed to challenge students’ skills and encourage time dedicated to reflection.
Short-term opportunities for long-term impact
Anyone can get a gist of the UWC-USA experience thanks to its distinct, short-term programs. The Bartos Institute for the Constructive Engagement of Conflict (CEC) is all about peacemaking and global-mindedness. Through online and real-time programming, participants — students, school leaders, faculty, and community members — gain valuable insights into CEC methodologies.
The Global Leadership Forum, created as a summer program for young people, provides an engaging preview of the UWC-USA curriculum. This initiative is an outstanding opportunity for students and families to explore engaging discussions, experiential learning, and collaborative activities. These experiences are designed to enhance leadership abilities and increase global awareness, making it a valuable introduction for those interested in furthering their educational pursuits.
