Huan's Success Story

Name: Huan Yi Yap
Course: BSc (Hons) Zoology
Year of study: First year
Country of domicile: Malaysia

Why did you choose to study at Swansea University?
I chose to study at Swansea University because of the course module. I believe that the modules provided in Swansea University fits my aspiration the most. Besides that, the location of the university by the beach. Even though I am studying zoology, I am also interested in the marine world. I take that with the location of the university by the beach, there will be a connection with my course and the beach such as field trips by the beach.

Can you tell us about your course and what do you enjoy the most?
I am interested in animals since I was young and hence decided to pursue my studies in a related subject. In my course, zoology, not only I have to learn about animals, but I also have to be all rounded and to know about the plants, ecology, and chemistry. I enjoy the most during the last semester when animal behaviour was thought because I am truly interested. Besides academic enjoyment, I am happy to meet new friends in this virtual circumstance. Me and my friends mostly met in lab sessions which are also fun to attend.

What are your three favourite things about Swansea?
The first thing would be the people in Swansea. People in Swansea I have met is kind and friendly and this does not apply only to the staff in the university. People off-campus are also willing to help in trivial things. I had an experience with a lady helping to pick fresher grapes which is considered weird to me, but it is warm when you think back to the moment. Besides that, the facility in the university is one of my favourite things. The last thing is the service provided by the university. As an international student, there is quite some things to sort when we reach Swansea such as the BRP and student card. The staff were helpful and helped me to sort out these important details quickly.

Would you recommend Swansea University to other international students?
Of course, I would recommend Swansea University to other international students. I had a nice time here in Swansea and I would like to share it with others as well. All things aside, I will recommend strongly that international students to come to Swansea University.

Quotes

“As a student, learning the contextual impact – seeing what IoT actually does to people's lives and what it does when you put it into a real-world scenario, is invaluable learning. To me, it’s fantastic that this course includes that kind of program.”

“The (IoT) journey is in data operations, it’s in hardware and networking, it's in operations and planning, it’s in business strategy. It really does find its way into lots of different places if you understand that the IoT is as much about technology as it is about the data it generates.”

IoT in the Health sector:
“IoT is changing the way that data and individuals come together in remote/ rural areas but also just in terms of the speed and efficiency of diagnoses, having equipment that can measure someone's heart rate and measure someone's biomechanics, in real time, in a small IoT device, and then have that information transmitted to a physician – that's an incredible area.”

Lee Hickin
AI Policy and Technology Advocacy Lead. Corporate, External & Legal Affairs. Microsoft Asia

“Manufacturing is another industry that is going to be, in fact, that is already, heavily reliant on IoT products.”

“We, at Fujitsu, look at people who can overcome problems. The qualities that employers seek today are graduates with problem solving skills, with entrepreneurial experience and innovators. The ones who are hungry for success, who are there to actually build products that are quite different from our competitors.”

Head of Innovation – Fujitsu

Follow in their footsteps

The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionising operational efficiency across most sectors, including infrastructure, construction, agriculture, logistics, healthcare, and industry. By interconnecting devices, IoT optimises resources and enhances decision-making processes.

Distinguished Professor Michael Sheng, Head of Macquarie University’s School of Computing leads a highly qualified team of academics, “The continued growth in the IoT market means a surge in demand for IoT professionals. MQ is your gateway to this exciting future.” Professionals, with IoT qualifications and expertise, are in high demand across these sectors. The Master of Information Technology in Internet of Things at Macquarie University is designed to meet this demand. This programme provides a comprehensive study of the design, configuration, and management of IoT systems and communication networks/services. It is unique to Macquarie, the only university in Sydney offering this specialised course.

“I’m in my third semester of my second year. I wanted to learn both the hardware and software. Macquarie had the option of integrating both. It has IT with IoT – that's why I chose Macquarie.”

“This semester I have embedded hardware systems, so I’m enjoying that. We do a lot of hands-on work with Arduino boards and many micro controllers. I’m quite excited doing it.”

Harishmitha Dharmalingam,
Second year Master student M.IT in Internet of Things

Mannisha Ann Thomas
First year Master student M.IT in Internet of Things

“I am currently in my second semester of my first year. The courses I like most we are doing now, senses and edge computing in IoT. It’s basically theoretical, a hardware-based course. Every week we get to play on different boards, Arduino boards, and write small programs to test out different programs. We also study the Edge and Cloud computing.”

“At Macquarie, they have a Buddy program, Macquarie Buddies and there are a lot of clubs and societies, maybe 70 – 80 societies you can join. Any interest or hobby, there is a society for that.”
