Skill-building studios open to all
Kent State University is dedicated to providing its students with leading-edge, technologically advanced facilities that facilitate learning, study, and research. Specifically, the CAED boasts state-of-the-art studios that nurture independent and collaborative inquiry, foster knowledge acquisition and management skills, and cultivate a robust work ethic to propel students' professional development.
Immersive experiential learning in studios, on sites, and in cities around the world
The INDEX studio forms an integral part of the Master of Urban Design and Master of Landscape Architecture programmes. The cross-disciplinary initiative focuses on immersive experiences in cities such as Havana, Beirut, Medellín, São Paulo, Curitiba, and Mexico City where students perform comparative analysis and design of a prominent Cleveland site alongside the reference global city. They learn to address the topics of revitalization, climate justice, sustainability and livability, and more through design.
These spaces catalyse meaningful interactions between faculty and students, fostering questions, stimulating dialogues, nurturing critical and creative thinking, and encouraging the exploration and application of new knowledge. As a result, learners develop a strong sense of design thinking that can last them a lifetime.
Preparing students for professional practice
The CAED offers four fully-accredited professional programmes, a liberal arts design study programme, education abroad opportunities, and various graduate degrees. These include Architecture, Architectural Studies, Construction Management, and Interior Design at the undergraduate level and, Architecture, Construction Management, Landscape Architecture, Health Systems and Facilities Design, Healthcare Design, Environmental Design, and Urban Design at the graduate level. All programmes share a common focus on workplace readiness. Notably, a recent survey of graduates from 2010 to the present showed that an impressive 70% secured architecture-related employment within six months of graduation.
